10 Celeb Cameos That Ruined PlayStation Games (And 10 That Saved Them) - TheThings Posted: 29 Jul 2019 12:35 PM PDT Soon after video games became a mainstream form of entertainment, it was pretty much guaranteed that celebrities would get involved. Back in the 1980s, some celebs had their faces digitized for use in games. Once technology improved, it was only natural that they would start lending their voices to games as well. However, it can be risky to bring a celebrity in to fill a major role in a video game - as many developers have found out the hard way. Their on-screen charisma doesn't always translate to voiceover work, and sometimes they just aren't very enthusiastic about the project. So as with all other ventures celebrities have found their way into, it can sometimes be great for both themselves and the game, and other times, both would've been better off without that partnership. Here are 10 celeb cameos that ruined Playstation games - and 10 that saved them. Continue scrolling to keep reading Click the button below to start this article in quick view advertising 20 Ruined It: Matthew Perry - Fallout: New VegasMatthew Perry is a self-professed video game nerd. In fact, it's rumored that he got his role in Fallout: New Vegas because he shared his love for Fallout 3 on mainstream talk shows. Unfortunately, he sounds bored and lacks a personality in the game. It's like he hated every second of the voice acting. 19 Saved It: Pierce Brosnan – 007 Everything Or NothingGoldeneye 007 is one of the most beloved video games of all time - it set a new standard for games starring the super-spy. One of the few games that lived up to that standard was 007: Everything or Nothing, where Pierce Brosnan lends both his likeness and voice to Bond, making the game feel like a lost Bond movie - it even has an original theme song by pop star Mya. 18 Ruined It: Carmen Electra – Def Jam: Fight For N.Y.Def Jam: Fight For NY was actually a very good game, and already had more than two dozen rappers and other people with legitimate ties to hip-hop culture - it made absolutely no sense to shoehorn Carmen Electra in there. She wasn't even needed to increase the level of sexiness of the game - Li'l Kim and Kimora Lee Simmons were already taking care of that. advertising 17 Saved It: Stan Lee - SpidermanThe late, great Stan Lee, was sometimes referred to as the "King of Cameos." The Marvel Comics legend was popping up in movies, TV shows, and video games that were based on properties he helped to create. He showed up as the narrator of the Spider-Man game for PlayStation in 2000, which helped to convince people of its legitimacy after a string of sub-par Spidey games. 16 Ruined It: Kiefer Sutherland – Metal Gear Solid VFor Metal Gear Solid V, director Hideo Kojima decided to swap out actor David Hayter - who had voiced the main character since the late 90s - for actor Kiefer Sutherland. Sutherland is fine and all, and played the role decently enough... but after all that time, fans were used to Hayter, and no other voice was ever going to sound right. advertising 15 Saved It: Jean Reno - Onimusha 3: Demon SiegeThese days, having a video game character that looks exactly like the real-life actor who is portraying them is nothing special. During the PlayStation 2 era, it was a pretty big deal. By Onimusha 3, the franchise's popularity was fading, so Capcom needed something to draw people in– and that something was getting the globally-recognized Jean Reno to "play" a character in the game. 14 Ruined It: Michael Jackson – Space Channel 5 Part 2It's difficult to enjoy Michael Jackson's appearance in Space Channel 5 Part 2 – actually, it's hard to enjoy his appearance in just about anything these days. Talk about a ruined legacy. But MJ's appearance in this game was bizarre at the time as well. In a game that introduced singing, Michael didn't do any singing - he just screamed his signature "Woo" and for some reason shouted "Bang!" advertising 13 Saved It: Bruce Campbell – Evil Dead: Hail To The KingThe main reason the Evil Dead franchise is a success is courtesy of actor Bruce Campbell's portrayal of Ash Williams. Just like the Evil Dead movies, the video game wouldn't be the same without him. In fact, 2001's Hail to the King was a mostly mediocre Resident Evil rip-off that was saved by delightfully fun dialogue by Campbell. 12 Ruined It: Peter Dinklage – DestinyWhile Peter Dinklage was amazing as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, he's also known for one of the worst celebrity performances in recent memory. We are of course talking about his role as Ghost in Destiny - the player's small robotic sidekick. All of Dinklage's lines were delivered completely apathetic and he would be replaced by Nolan North in all content, including his original lines. advertising 11 Saved It: Keith David – Saints Row IVKeith David has become a powerful presence both on-screen and off thanks to his booming voice. After appearing in previous installments of the series, he showed up in Saints Row IV playing an exaggerated version of himself. A bit of self-referential humor went a long way in revitalizing the franchise. And you can tell that David had a ton of fun delivering his lines. 10 Ruined It: Mena Suvari – Kingdom Hearts IIMena Suvari took over the role of Aerith from Mandy Moore for this game. Her relationship with Cloud in Final Fantasy VII was one of the most fascinating in the game. In this game, the lines delivered by Suvari are a complete mess. Sometimes monotonous, sometimes with weird inflection, and sometimes with awkward pauses - it would probably be better not including her at all. 9 Saved It: Sean Connery – From Russia With LoveEA decided to make a new video game adaptation of one of the most beloved Bond movies, starring arguably the most beloved Bond – and so, 22 years after his last time playing Bond on screen, Sean Connery returned one last time to voice his most iconic character in a video game adaptation of From Russia With Love. And it's awesome! 8 Ruined It: David Spade – The Legend Of Spyro: A New BeginningDavid Spade in the role of Sparx the dragonfly is just a bland and mediocre performance. Spade was cast as the dragon's sidekick when the Spyro series was re-branded back in 2006. While the character's dialogue might scream "sassy comedic relief," the actor's sleepwalk performance certainly doesn't. Really disappointing, and we expected more of Spade. 7 Saved It: Liam Neeson – Fallout 3Previous attempts at a third Fallout game got canceled, the rights were picked up by Bethesda, which didn't go down well with hardcore fans. The first character you meet in the game happens to be your father, played by none other than Liam Neeson. His appearance made fans of the franchise give the game a chance and most ended up being pleasantly surprised. 6 Ruined It: Christopher Walken – True Crime: Streets Of LAThis 2003 crime game that followed in Grand Theft Auto's footsteps focused on a cop tracking a series of bombings. It's a fairly bleak plot that is very unfortunately narrated by the protagonist's friend, George, voiced by Christopher Walken. While others on this list turned in mediocre performances, Walken is over the top in his delivery - unfortunately, it's not a comedy game. 5 Saved It: J.K. Simmons – Portal 2J.K. Simmons had his breakout roles in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and Whiplash. While he has shown his acting range in softer roles, as Cave Johnson in Portal 2 he really taps into what has made him so popular - with an added dose of hysterical ranting. The founder of Aperture Science left behind voice recordings the player discovers throughout the game. Simmons' eccentric and wild performance makes them incredibly entertaining. 4 Ruined It: Michael Biehn – Aliens: Colonial MarinesMichael Biehn was given the chance to reprise a role that made him popular: Dwayne Hicks from the Aliens franchise. But while he was engaging on-screen, his performance in Aliens: Colonial Marines comes off as completely phoned in. Biehn won't argue with us on this one as he spoke out about the voiceover recording sessions - calling them "passionless." 3 Saved It: Phil Collins – GTA: Vice City StoriesWhen Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories was released on PSP, it was the fifth GTA using the same basic GTA III framework - it was starting to feel stale. Rockstar decided to do something special to get people paying attention to this game, so they got musician Phil Collins to appear as himself both in an in-game concert and as a character that was part of the plot. 2 Ruined It: Dave Attell – Outlaw Golf 2Now-defunct developer Hypnotix released a line of edgy sports games under the Outlaw name. The games featured fighting, strippers, ethnic stereotypes, and commentary full of crude humor. None other than Steve Carrell was the original Outlaw Golf's commentator, and his brilliant deadpan helped to sell otherwise bad jokes and references. His replacement, comedian Dave Attell, just wasn't anywhere near Carrell's level regarding joke delivery. 1 Saved It: Bill Murray – Ghostbusters: The Video GamePerhaps the most beloved Ghostbusters property outside of the first movie, 2009's Ghostbusters: The Video Game is thought of in many fan circles as the real Ghostbusters III. Its existence hinged entirely on the notoriously picky Bill Murray, who had long resisted doing a third Ghostbusters film, returning to reprise his role of Peter Venkman. Nia Sharma is one of the sexiest women of the TV industry and no, we are not the only ones saying it. The actress, who is all set to work for Jamai Raja 2, which will come in the form of a webseries, has been ruling our hearts ever since she stepped into the TV industry. Her fans and audiences have seen her grow and evolve to become who she is now. Recently, the actress shared a video of hers from the van. She could be seen singing Main Jahan Rahoon from the film Namaste London and she has captioned it as, "We literally put our soul while singing this song we both love and sing every day. P.S it's my most fav song of all times." While fans and friends from the industry have lauded Nia and her make-up artist for the duet that they had put up, someone seems to be not so amused. It is none other than the original singer of the song, Krishna Beura. The singer came across this video via fans who asked him about his reactions and here is what he wrote. ![]() He later deleted the post. Talking to a web portal, the singer said that he felt like Nia and her make-up artist were mocking the song. He said, "I respect Nia as a very good artist. Being into the same industry we mutually have to respect each other's work. Being a singer, I can clearly make out that they are not trying to sing the song, but are making fun of it. The green T-shirt guy along with her is doing more caricaturist thing than Nia. I don't follow Nia on social media, so I wasn't also aware about it until and unless few of my fans sent me that video saying 'Sir, please see they are trying to mock the song' and it really pinched me. Believe me it was so difficult for me and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan also because Himesh Reshammiya has made that so high. In fact, today also whenever we perform that song in concerts it's not easy to sing. It's not only me, but our Gurus like Nusrat Sahab are also being disrespected. The lines that they are singing are not by Rahat, they are my parts which they are mocking." ![]() He is particularly not quite happy with her make-up artist. He further added, "Nia's expression was still okay as she was smiling and all but his make-up artist was mocking it more. I also understand that the way we can sing, no one can sing and that's why we are singers, just like I can't act the way she acts as she is a good actor. But being an artist, she should not do this because it's a very very legendary song and not a random party song. It's an intense song and as I am associated with the song. I couldn't resist myself to put out." Well, he is quite angry, visibly, at Nia. Do you think that Krishna is right? Let us know in the comments. |
Posted: 07 Jul 2019 12:00 AM PDT This post contains spoilers for Season 3 of Stranger ThingsOur tears have not even dried yet after the devastating revelation that our beloved Sheriff Hopper died sacrificing himself in the Stranger Things Season 3 finale. But fans are already on the case with convincing theories about why he's actually, probably, definitely still alive. The writers themselves even appear to have purposefully left that door open, with a conspicuous mention of an "American" prisoner at the Russian facility in the end credits scene. But there are more subtle hints, too. And redditors are desperately scrounging for all of them to help us all remain in the denial phase of this grieving process. We just can't quit this dad bod Image: netflix The actual "death" scene in question leaves ample room for debate and fake-outs. Specifically when Joyce turns the key to destroy the machine, there's a long six-second black out before it cuts back and we see the hazmat suit guys get vaporized. But we don't see any bit of Hopper's demise. There's also the golden rule for verifying fictional character death (especially on a show's that's done death fake-outs before, like Eleven in Season 1): no body = no death. And we can't imagine a reason why the writers wouldn't show Hopper's death on screen — other than to cover up the fact that he didn't die. Actually, some fans even claim that Hopper is mysteriously missing from the spot he was standing in when the camera cuts back to the machine right after Joyce turns the key. Also when the same machine explodes at the Russian facility in the opening scene of Episode 1, it shows how vaporized people disintegrate into piles of fleshy goo. But when Joyce runs over to where Hopper was, there's no trace of the Sheriff (goo or otherwise) on the ground, another redditor points out. So what actually happened to him if he's not dead? The most likely answer is that Hopper either jumped through the open portal into the Upside Down, or it took him through a wormhole that spat him out at the Russian facility harboring the Demogorgon. With the exception of El, Hopper is one of the most knowledgeable Stranger Things characters on the subject of traveling between the two worlds. Remember: he's had experience doing it not once, but twice. It would also create a nice parallel between the seasons if Season 1's arc was about rescuing Will from the Upside Down, Season 2 was about closing the portal to it, Season 3 was about losing another person in the Upside Down, and Season 4 ended with another rescue mission (but this time the original rescuer needs saving). It's also pretty suspicious that the show conveniently takes El's powers away during the Battle of Starcourt, so she can't look for Hopper in the aftermath to confirm whether he's dead or alive. Don't give up Joyce — that's what you're known for! Image: netflix Then there's the musical cue. One Reddit post focused on how the song playing over Hopper's emotional speech at the very end is a Peter Gabriel cover of David Bowie's "Heroes." That's important because the same exact rendition of this song came up before in Season 1, Episode 3, when Will's fake body was found in the quarry. We don't think the creators would pick the same song twice by accident. But repeating it could be a subtle, almost unconscious clue for viewers to be suspicious of even a seemingly irrefutable character death. An IRL easter egg from Season 3 lets viewers actually call Murray's phone number seen in Episode 6. You get his voicemail, which specifically mentions that he has an "update" for Joyce that's "not good or bad, but it's something." Some suspect it's an update on Hopper's whereabouts, which are perilous at best even if he's not dead. Still others cast doubt that "the American" mentioned by the Russian in that end credits isn't Hopper, but rather El's other father figure, Dr. Brenner (aka Papa). We honestly hope this monster's been locked up and tortured by Russians since Season 2 Image: netflix As one redditor points out, "Dr. Brenner is alive, as we were told by Ray Carroll in Season 2 when Eleven and Kali were confronting him at his apartment and this is confirmed by the Duffer Brothers and [executive producer Shawn] Levy in interviews." So it would makes sense if Brenner was MIA from Season 3 because he was too busy being a Russian prisoner. But even if the American prisoner isn't Hopper, that doesn't mean he's dead. The writers knew viewers would cling onto this throwaway line as proof, so it sets up a great red herring for revealing the prisoner to be Brenner instead of Hopper. Right when you'd lost all hope, they could hit us with another twist, revealing Hopper is also still alive but in grave danger and trapped. Either way, we're keeping this door of possibility open three inches until we see absolute proof that Hopper is gone for good. |
