| Introducing Redbird Life - News - Illinois State University News Posted: 20 Aug 2019 11:43 AM PDT ![]() Festival ISU and Redbird Life provide students the opportunity to explore student organizations on campus. In student affairs, we take great care in listening to student needs and strategically finding ways to address them. As such, when students expressed the need for a central tool to find out what is happening on campus, the Division of Student Affairs took on the task of identifying and implementing a new student involvement portal, Redbird Life. Redbird Life serves as a primary resource for students looking to get involved on campus, explore student organizations, and find campus events. Specific features include a searchable database of organizations and events, a promotional newsfeed, and the ability for students to track their involvement. "The Redbird Life portal is going to (make) getting involved on campus so much easier! Being able to search for organizations by interest, see what they're all about, find out about their events, and contact them all from one website is a game changer." -Delia Sargeant, senior "The Redbird Life portal is a great way to directly connect students to student organizations and departments that fit their interests, academics, and careers. This is important, especially for new students, in order to assist in navigating campus resources and learning how to build their new Redbird community," said Amy Miller, specialist in the Dean of Students Office. Planning for Redbird Life took place throughout the 2018–2019 academic year, led by an implementation team with representation across the division. Student Affairs Information Technology (SAIT) was integral in both securing the contract for the portal, as well as providing the technological support required for such a complex project. Additionally, content experts from the Dean of Students Office, Campus Recreation, the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning, University Housing Services, and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs contributed their knowledge and support in order to ensure that the portal would be an effective tool for students. The implementation team planned a soft launch of the portal in spring 2019, with Registered Student Organizations (RSO's) building their profiles during their annual re-registration process. The official launch occurred during the summer Preview program, where over 3,500 new students were introduced to the portal. Redbird Life will be promoted to returning students during this year's Festival ISU on Thursday, August 29. "The Redbird Life portal is going to (make) getting involved on campus so much easier! Being able to search for organizations by interest, see what they're all about, find out about their events, and contact them all from one website is a game-changer," said Illinois State senior Delia Sargeant. To explore student organizations and events on campus, visit RedbirdLife.IllinoisState.edu and log in using your ULID and password. You can also access and save your event pass, which will be used to check in to many campus events. |
| Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ to Open New York Film Festival - Variety Posted: 29 Jul 2019 12:00 AM PDT "The Irishman" will, it turns out, be ready in time to world premiere as the opening night film of the 57th New York Film Festival. Martin Scorsese's long-gestating crime drama, which relies on special effects to "de-age" stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, has long eyed the coveted slot. After all, Scorsese is perhaps the most quintessentially New York of filmmakers and he's also personally close to the festival's director Kent Jones. But given the complexity of the effects work, as well as Scorsese's perfectionism in the editing room, there was chatter that "The Irishman" might not be finished in time for a glitzy world premiere at Alice Tully Hall. Well, put those fears to rest. "The Irishman," the roughly $160 million crime drama, is one of Netflix's major Oscar season hopefuls. It's the ninth time that De Niro has worked with Scorsese and the first time that Pacino has been directed by the filmmaker. The cast also includes Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel, two longtime Scorsese collaborators. The ensemble also boasts Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin, and Ray Romano. Based on Charles Brandt's nonfiction book "I Heard You Paint Houses," "The Irishman" focuses on the relationship between labor union leader and hitman Frank Sheeran (De Niro) and Jimmy Hoffa (Pacino), the Teamsters' honcho who disappeared in 1975 in mysterious circumstance. He was declared dead in absentia in 1982. Pesci will play Pennsylvania mob boss Russell Bufalino while Keitel will co-star as mobster Angelo Bruno. "The Irishman" will be released in select theaters and on Netflix later this year. There's been a lot of debate about how wide a release the film will receive. Scorsese reportedly wants it to be seen on as many screens as possible, but Netflix doesn't adhere to traditional theatrical windows. It likes its movies to play on its streaming service within weeks of their cinema debuts, something that infuriates major theater chains such as AMC and Regal, which refuse to screen them. "'The Irishman 'is so many things: rich, funny, troubling, entertaining and, like all great movies, absolutely singular," Jones said in a statement. "It's the work of masters, made with a command of the art of cinema that I've seen very rarely in my lifetime, and it plays out at a level of subtlety and human intimacy that truly stunned me. All I can say is that the minute it was over my immediate reaction was that I wanted to watch it all over again." Many festivals, such as Toronto and Sundance, have a spotty track record when it comes to picking opening night films. It's a fate that the New York Film Festival has largely avoided. There have been a few duds, such as "Last Flag Flying" and "The Walk," but most of the kick-off movies have emerged to become major Oscar contenders or commercial successes. Recent festival openers include "Gone Girl," "Life of Pi," "The Social Network," and "The Favourite." "I greatly admire the bold and visionary selections that the festival presents to audiences year after year," said Scorsese. "The festival is critical to bringing awareness to cinema from around the world. I am grateful to have the opportunity to premiere my new picture in New York alongside my wonderful cast and crew." Although many members of the cast have appeared in seminal Scorsese films such as "Mean Streets" and "Raging Bull," they've haven't been in one of his pictures in decades. De Niro and Pesci last worked with Scorsese in 1995's "Casino" and Keitel's last collaboration with the director was 1987's "The Last Temptation of Christ." The 17-day New York Film Festival is presented by Film at Lincoln Center. It runs from Sept. 27 through Oct. 13. Popular on Variety |

| ‘Joker,’ ‘Ad Astra,’ ‘The Laundromat,’ ‘Marriage Story’ to Compete in Venice - Variety Posted: 25 Jul 2019 12:00 AM PDT A robust roster of awards contenders, including Brad Pitt space odyssey "Ad Astra" and Steven Soderbergh's star-studded financial scandal comedy "The Laundromat," will launch from the Venice Film Festival, which features a bit less high-wattage Hollywood fare this year but no shortage of hotly anticipated world premieres and stars. The four U.S. pics in the Lido's 21-title competition are all high-profile entries, starting with Fox's "Ad Astra," directed by James Gray, which features Pitt as an astronaut on a mission to save the solar system from imminent destruction. Netflix continues its strong track record on the Lido (where "Roma" debuted last year) with Noah Baumbach's intimate divorce drama, "Marriage Story," with Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson as a couple in conflict, and "The Laundromat," which stars Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas in a tale based on the Panama Papers exposé. Warner Bros. is launching "Joker," directed by Todd Philips and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro in what is expected to be a deliciously dark and gritty R-rated comic-book movie. Amazon will be in Venice with out-of-competition entry "Seberg" (previously titled "Against All Enemies"), toplining Kristen Stewart as actress Jean Seberg. The political thriller directed by Benedict Andrews centers on attempts by the FBI to discredit Seberg through its Cointelpro program in retaliation for her support of the Black Panther Party. Australian helmer David Michod's Netflix title "The King," an adaptation of several Shakespeare plays with an ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, and Lily-Rose Depp, is also launching out-of-competition. The competition slate features only two films directed by women: Saudi Arabian director Haifaa Al-Mansour's "The Perfect Candidate" and the directorial debut of Australia's Shannon Murphy, "Babyteeth." "The Perfect Candidate" is a comedic drama about a young Saudi female physician who maneuvers through her conservative, male-dominated society to run in municipal elections. "Babyteeth" is a comedy involving a couple whose seriously ill teenage daughter has fallen madly in love with a drug dealer. French auteur Olivier Assayas will compete with his English-language spy thriller, "Wasp Network," which stars Penelope Cruz and Gael Garcia Bernal. Other entries from France vying for a Golden Lion are "Gloria Mundi," set in Marseille and directed by Robert Guediguian, and Roman Polanski's "An Officer and a Spy," starring Jean Dujardin as the French army officer who works to get to the bottom of the Dreyfus Affair, a notorious case of anti-Semitism in France. Polanski's arrival on the Lido is likely to cause a stir in the wake of his expulsion from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The in-competition opener, as previously announced, is French-Japanese co-production "The Truth," from Palme d'Or-winner Hirokazu Kore-eda, starring Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche and Ethan Hawke and marking the helmer's first work set outside his native Japan. Asia has a strong competition presence besides "The Truth." With berths in the lineup are veteran Hong Kong director Yonfan's animation debut, "No. 7 Cherry Lane," a love triangle involving a university student, a single mother and her teenage daughter, and Chinese director Lou Ye's black-and-white thriller "Saturday Fiction," starring Gong Li as an iconic actress in 1941 Shanghai during the Japanese occupation. But whether the latter film gets its "Dragon Seal" release permit, and then whether it remains in Chinese authorities' good graces all the way to the screen, is not certain. South American helmers have scored two competition slots. Chilean director Pablo Larrain ("Jackie") is back with "Ema," starring Garcia Bernal as a dancer in a marriage crisis, and Colombia's Ciro Guerra ("Embrace the Serpent," "Birds of Passage") with his adaptation of J.M. Coetzee's prize-winning novel "Waiting for the Barbarians." It stars Johnny Depp, Mark Rylance and Robert Pattinson. Veteran Swedish auteur Roy Andersson, who won the 2014 Golden Lion with "A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence," will be back in competition on the Lido with his similarly absurdist "About Endlessness." Czech director Vaclav Marhoul will compete with his adaptation of Jerzy Kosinski's Holocaust novel "The Painted Bird," with an ensemble cast including Stellan Skarsgard, Julian Sands and Harvey Keitel. The Italian titles in the running for a Lion are all set in southern Italy. Mario Martone ("Capri Revolution") is back with "The Mayor of Rione Sanità," a contemporary adaptation of the play about organized crime by late Neapolitan playwright Eduardo De Filippo. Pietro Marcello's "Martin Eden" is an adaptation of Jack London's novel about a young self-taught American sailor struggling to become a writer, with the story and setting transposed to a fable-like 19th century Naples. And Sicily's Franco Maresco has landed a slot with "La Mafia non è più quella di una volta" (which translates as "The Mafia Isn't What It Used to Be"), billed as a grotesque look at present-day Palermo through the eyes of famed photographer Letizia Battaglia, who chronicled Palermo's Mafia wars in the 1970s and '80s. Two high-end Italian TV skeins, Paolo Sorrentino's new limited series, "The New Pope," and Stefano Sollima's cocaine-trafficking drama, "ZeroZeroZero," are getting a Venice bow, out of competition. Both are produced by Sky Studios. Also granted an out-of-competition slot is the directorial debut of U.S. screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan ("World War Z"), "Mosul," based on journalist Luke Mogelson's stories in the New Yorker about his time embedded with a SWAT unit as they fought against ISIS on the front lines in northern Iraq. As previously announced, Argentinian director Lucrecia Martel will preside over the jury, and Julie Andrews and Pedro Almodovar will be honored with Golden Lions for lifetime achievement, following the pattern of Venice awarding career prizes to an actor and a director. The festival also features a competitive virtual-reality section. The 76th Venice Film Festival runs from Aug. 28 to Sept. 7. VENICE FILM FESTIVAL LINEUP IN COMPETITION "The Truth," Kore-eda Hirokazu (France, Japan) – OPENING FILM OUT OF COMPETITION – Fiction "The Burnt Orange Heresy," Giuseppe Capotondi (U.K., Italy) – CLOSING FILM OUT OF COMPETITION – Non-Fiction "Woman," Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Anastasia Mikova (France) OUT OF COMPETITION – Special Screenings "No One Left Behind," Guillermo Arriaga (Mexico) HORIZONS "Pelican Blood," Katrin Gebbe (Germany, Bulgaria) Popular on Variety |
| Posted: 29 Jul 2019 12:00 AM PDT Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Monday promised a "robust security plan" to protect patrons at this weekend's Lollapalooza music festival after a random shooting at a California food festival killed three people, including a 6-year-old boy. "Every time something happens nationally — you'll recall that there was a report a year ago that the Las Vegas shooter had secured a hotel room here — so, we are taking all of these things into consideration," the mayor said. Lighftoot said she plans to participate in a "table-top-exercise" on Tuesday, two days before music lovers are expected to descend on Grant Park, to test the "robust security plan" put together by the Chicago Police Department and organizers of Lollapalooza. "We are vigorously, aggressively reaching out, planning and drawing upon resources form our federal partners to make sure that there's no incident here in Chicago," the mayor said. "Now, somebody who's determined obviously poses a challenge. But it's not gonna be for lack of preparation on our part." Lollapalooza organizers did not respond to a request for comment. The Garlic Festival attracts more than 100,000 people to Gilroy, about 80 miles from San Francisco, known as the "Garlic Capital of the World." On, Sunday, a 19-year-old shooter, later identified as Santino William Legan, cut through a fence and opened fire with a rifle on a crowd listening to music. Police reportedly responded to the scene within a minute and killed the shooter. Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications released a statement Monday reiterating that OEMC and the Chicago Police Department "work year-round with the organizers" of Lollapalooza "to plan and rehearse security and response plans." "Each year, tighter security measures are implemented including a layered security plan that includes elements that are seen and unseen, in addition to an enhanced security and law enforcement presence inside and outside the festival," the statement said. Once again, businesses in the "footprint" of the festival have been canvassed "to ensure we have a joint effort in place to maintain security and building management's contact info and advise building personnel of our federated camera network and to increase their awareness to report any suspicious activity to 911." "A Lollapalooza Public Safety Workshop is conducted and enhanced each year to improve upon an already robust security and public safety plan. We continue to adjust our plans to ensure public safety so this can be an enjoyable event for all," the statement said. Last year, the Chicago Police Department beefed up security in the wake of the October 2017 mass shooting at a country concert in Las Vegas — and after reports that the Vegas gunman, Stephen Paddock, may have eyed the Chicago festival as a potential target last summer. At the time, the police widened their patrol perimeter around the music festival to include adjacent streets and high-rise buildings. The number of police, safety and security personnel both inside and outside the festival was increased substantially. Patrons were subjected to "TSA-style security that included magnetometer screening and a full-body pat-down. All bags were searched. Backpacks were banned. Only small purses and bags were allowed. Water bottles were emptied. They could be filled, only inside the festival after patrons cleared security. "Las Vegas taught us all across the country to do things a bit differently," Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said then, promising "eyes in the sky," including snipers on rooftops, cameras and helicopters. "The important piece is to be prepared in the event that something does happen." After the Las Vegas shooting last October left 58 dead and injured hundreds more, it was revealed the gunman, Stephen Paddock, had booked a room at the Blackstone Hotel on Michigan Avenue — overlooking Lollapalooza — for that weekend, but never checked in. Instead, on Oct. 1 2017, Paddock holed up in a 32nd-floor room at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, overlooking a country music concert, and fired over a thousand bullets into the crowd before killing himself. As a result, the Office of Emergency Management and Communications refined its crisis response plan and canvassed business owners in the area to make them familiar with the new measures. They met with representatives from major hotel chains downtown to develop safety plans. They encouraged hotels to report suspicious activity and to join Chicago's Public and Private Partnership portal, where they can post live updates should something happen. Lollapalooza, which starts Thursday and runs through Sunday, always draws a massive crowd. Two years ago, Sasha and Malia Obama were among those attending. In the event of a weather evacuation, festival officials said guests can relocate to one of the underground parking garages at the north and south ends of Grant Park and on the east side of Millennium Park.
