Three major reasons Halton can look forward to 2021 - Liverpool Echo Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:06 AM PST It is safe to say that 2020 has been tough for everybody, with the pandemic forcing us inside and cancelling almost everything we were looking forward to this year. Halton has not escaped the virus, which along with the health consequences, has seen highly anticipated events cancelled. A tribute to the Stone Roses' legendary Spike Island gig scheduled for the summer had to be called off, as did the usual Bonfire Night fireworks display and the much-loved pantomime at the Brindley. But with the vaccine beginning to be delivered to the borough's most vulnerable residents, people in Widnes and Runcorn can begin to hope for a better 2021. With that in mind, here are a few things we can look forward to in Halton next year. Major gig planned for DCBL Stadium2021 is set to see the first major gig at Widnes' DCBL Stadium since Elton John played to a sold-out crowd in 2017 with Canadian superstar Bryan Adams heading to town on his UK tour. The "Summer of 69" singer has signed on to play a gig at the stadium on July 2, by which point it is hoped that the vaccine will mean things will be back to normal and all 14,000 seats can be filled. Announcing the concert, Cllr Phil Harris, the Halton Council executive board member responsible for the stadium, said: "I'm delighted we have another huge gig coming to the stadium and expect it to be as great a success as the Elton John tour visit was. "This is something both residents and many local businesses can look forward to in 2021, after what has been a very challenging year." The gig has already broken records for pre-sale registration, so as long as the vaccine works out it should be a big day. Keep up to date with coronavirus cases in your area by adding your postcode below Borough of Culture set to bring post-Covid cheerThe Bryan Adams gig is just one high profile event taking place next year as part of Halton's stint as the Liverpool City Region's Borough of Culture. And if you don't have a ticket for the concert, there should still be plenty happening that you can get involved in. The current plans suggest a parade over the Silver Jubilee Bridge as the centrepiece of the celebrations, including floats handmade by community groups along with street theatre, live music and food and drink. Plans also include a borough-wide weekend music festival in May that will "light up the borough with a cacophony of sounds in small venues and unusual spaces", as well as a festival for under-15s, a repeat of February's "MakeFest" and an illumination trail around Norton Priory. The North West Vintage Rally, another event that had to be cancelled due the pandemic, will also make a return to the borough as part of the Borough of Culture year. Maybe the bridge will finally reopenNo, really. It is already more than three years since the Silver Jubilee Bridge closed for repairs following the opening of the Mersey Gateway. It was originally meant to be closed for just a year, but the bridge's reopening has repeatedly been delayed as the council incorporated it into plans to regenerate the area around Runcorn station. This involved demolishing a redundant flyover and building new road connections to the bridge, with provisional dates being announced and then missed. In August 2020, the council said it expected the bridge to reopen some time in the autumn, but that deadline also had to fall by the wayside after engineers discovered yet more repairs needed to be done. The latest date for the bridge's reopening is February 2021, some 40 months after it closed. |
Posted: 16 Mar 2020 12:00 AM PDT Elton John has postponed a significant portion of his upcoming "Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour" due to concerns over the coronavirus outbreak. The news follows Live Nation's announcement to halt all major tours and the lockdown of major cities like New York and Los Angeles. The impacted North American tour dates were supposed to take place between March 26th through May 2nd and include shows in Toronto, Montreal, New York, Indianapolis, Newark, Grand Rapids, and Detroit. A statement notes that the 19 postponed concerts will be rescheduled to a later date and all original tickets will be honored. According to one of the affected venues, Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the rescheduled date will be sometime in 2021. "This tough decision has been made with the safety and well-being of his fans put to the fore, at a time when health services are under increased pressure and with the concern that these gatherings risk accelerating the spread of the Coronavirus [COVID-19]," the statement reads. "Elton looks forward to continuing to perform for his dedicated fans around the world and thanks you for your support." Editors' Picks As of now, John's "Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour" is planned to resume May 22nd in Columbia, South Carolina. Purchase concert tickets to his remaining scheduled dates here. Per reports, the elderly — those over 60 — are more vulnerable to severe complications from COVID-19. The 72-year-old John just recovered from walking pneumonia. The live music industry has seen an unprecedented fallout in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Billie Eilish, and Thom Yorke have all postponed their highly anticipated tours, and major festivals such as Coachella and South By Southwest have had to drastically change their plans last minute. Even the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony and Record Store Day 2020 have been put on hold. Elton John 2020 Concert Tour Dates:
