Electric Picnic Set To 'go Green' As Main Stage To Be

Electric Picnic's main stage is set to be

The music festival, which takes place from August 16 until August 18, will be the first festival in the UK and Ireland that will see the main stage

The grid power will ultimately reduce carbon emissions associated with powering the main stage of the festival in 2024 and reduce the need to use temporary generators.

Melvin Benn, Managing Director Festival Republic said: "'The installation of our first grid connection is a key contributor to our goal of reducing carbon emissions associated with the festival by 50 per cent by 2030 in line with our Green Nation Charter.

"I hope that by leading the way and sharing what we have learned, festival goers can have an amazing time at Electric Picnic safe in the knowledge that we are doing everything we can to minimise the impact on the only planet we have got."

Festival Republic will submit a planning application for a substation and if successful, work will begin later this year on delivering grid power to the main stage which will mark the transition of the outdoor live sector to renewable power.

The goal is to inspire other festivals to assess the feasibility of connecting their event to the national grid, as this is a long-term sustainable solution to reduce carbon emissions at festivals.

Melvin has been campaigning for several years to have a more eco-friendly festival.

In 2022, he told us: "I mean you saw a little less here but certainly in the UK, you saw London burning... It is really coming home. It's coming close and it is getting close every year and you know the electric picnic festival goers have been pretty conscientious about it but we're going to be working hard. One of my aims here is to bring electricity into the site so at least the main stage can run off mains electricity that is sustainable electricity off grids.

"That means I don't have to transport generators etc so it is a constant push for us, really keen sustainability targets. It isn't just about festivals," he added at the time.
