The summer show season kicks off in a big way this week, with everything from gritty rockers to classic soul singers on the list for the next two weeks. As for shows that are just announced, there are a pair of stage shows debuting soon, plus the lineup (or most of it) for the upcoming Nugget Rib Cook-Off. Plus, there are big indie rock acts, classic rock bands and a man with a marshmallow for a head. Only in Reno!

Here are the top shows that have either been announced in the past two weeks or are coming up in the next two weeks.

JUST ANNOUNCED

"Solid Gold Soul"

This new show at Harrah's Tahoe features tributes to artists such as Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Diana Ross and Little Richard, plus Bobby Brooks Wilson, the son of the late Jackie Wilson. It takes place at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays in the South Shore Room, Harrah's Lake Tahoe, 15 Highway 50, Stateline.

Brent Amaker and the Rodeo

Playing country music with an indie-rock edge, this excellent Seattle band is playing this very under-the-radar show in Reno. With a new album on the way, Amaker and his group are a must-see for fans who want to see a great live band do something truly different in their own genre. They play at 9 p.m. at The Loving Cup, 188 California Ave.

The Four Tops

Featuring founding member Duke Fakir, this Motown vocal group was one of the most popular of its era, with his such as "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)," "Reach Out, I'll Be There," and "Ain't No Woman Like the One I Got." They perform at
8 p.m. at the Ballroom, Nugget Casino Resort, 1100 Nugget Ave., Sparks

"Hot Jersey Nights"

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons will be playing live in Reno this July, but fans of that band's music will get tons of chances to hear their big hits in this tribute show. They've also added a tribute-within-a-tribute to The Beach Boys (who are not from Jersey, but just roll with it, OK?). The shows takes place Thursdays through Saturdays at Sammy's Showroom, Harrah's Reno, 219 N. Center St.

The Commodores

Lionel Richie is long gone, but there are still several original members in this legendary pop-soul group. This current lineup includes William Orange, the guy who sang on "Brick House" and J.D. Nicholas, who powered the band's last big hit, "Night Shift." The band plays at 8 p.m. in the Grande Exposition Hall, Silver Legacy Resort Casino, 345 N. Virginia St.

Infamous Stringdusters

The casinos of Stateline are hosting lots of shows that take place right after Phish's dates at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena, including this one featuring the Stringdusters, who hail fro Virginia and have a traditional bluegrass sound that also mixes in the exploratory grooves of jam band music. The show takes place at 11 p.m. in the South Shore Room, Harrah's Lake Tahoe, 15 Highway 50, Stateline.

Marshmello

DJ/producers are sometimes beloved of costumes when they play to add to the visual element, and Marshello is no exception. Wearing a marshmallow-white mask with a cartoon face, Christopher Comstock has become known for bass-heavy remixes of acts like Ariana Grande, Adele and Future, as well as his own hits "Wolves," "Friends" and
Silence." Marshmello performs at 10 p.m. at Lex Nightclub, Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, 2500 E. 2nd St.

Bass Camp's 6th Anniversary Party

The popular dance/electronic music promoters Bass Camp are throwing a huge party to celebrate weathering trends and keeping their fans on the floor. The headliners are Miami DJ/artists GTA, who are known for going beyond the bass/trap sound into a wide variety of styles. The show takes place at 8 p.m. at Cargo, Whitney Peak Hotel, 255 N. Virginia St.

Florence and the Machine

With a brand new album hitting stores this month, this UK band is trying to lead another resurgence. Led by distinctive singer Florence Welch, the Machine plays dramatic, modern rock with a dark moodiness that has led to some very loyal fans. The band's hits include "Dog Days are Over," "Ship to Wreck" and "Shake It Out." The show is 7:30 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena, Harveys Lake Tahoe, 18 Highway 50, Stateline.

Geoff Tate's Operation Mindcrime

Divorce is often painful, and that's been the case for the musical separation of the band Queensryche from its longtime singer, Geoff Tate. Debates rage online about the worth of Tate's solo band (named for a famous album by Queensryche), but he does still have loyal fans who love his sonorous voice and way with a prog-metal epic. Tate and Co. return to Reno for a show at 8 p.m. at Cargo, Whitney Peak Hotel, 255 N. Virginia St.

Phillip Phillips and Gavin DeGraw

This tag-team of pop-rock singer/songwriters are both riding the buzz of recent albums that have shown off some different sides to their sounds. Phillips won "American Idol" in 2012 and since has become a staple of adult alternative radio. DeGraw has been around even longer - close to 15 years - and has both written and sung top hits for pop artists. They both play at 8 p.m. at Grande Exposition Hall, Silver Legacy Resort Casino, 345 N. Virginia St.

Nugget Rib Cook Off entertainment

Every year, this event in Victorian Square in Sparks features a free, live headliner on its main stage. This year, it's the usual varied styles, although there doesn't seem to be a huge name or legacy act as before. Neo-country/rock artist Colt Ford opens things up on Aug. 29, while Mark McGrath, who sang with alt-rock band Sugar Ray, is on Aug. 30. It's country again for singer Joe Diffie on Aug. 31, while alt-rock band 10,000 Maniacs is set for Sept. 1 (though in their lineup without former singer Natalie Merchant). Country singer Jana Kramer is the headliner on Sept. 2. All shows are at 7 p.m., and note that the Sept. 3 afternoon headliner after the rib winner is named hasn't been announced at deadline. The shows take place on Victorian Square in downtown Sparks, near the Nugget Casino Resort.

The O'Jays

Original members Eddie Levert and Walter Williams are still leading this incarnation of the Philly soul titans, known for big hits like "Love Train" and "For the Love of Money." They will play at 8 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom, Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.

Shovels and Rope

This husband-and-wife duo from South Carolina is making a name of itself with its mix of folk, rock and country. Sometimes it's delicate and beautiful; other times it is raucous and noisy. Expect the unexpected at their show at 8 p.m. at Cargo, Whitney Peak Hotel, 255 N. Virginia St.

Foreigner

Band leader and guitarist Mick Jones brings this classic rock troupe back for another Reno-Tahoe show. They are best known for songs like "Waiting for A Girl Like You," "Urgent" and "Hot Blooded." Foreigner's back at 8 p.m. at Grande Exposition Hall, Silver Legacy Resort Casino, 345 N. Virginia St.

Styx

The two guitarist/vocalists from this band's '70s/'80s pomp - Tommy Shaw and JY Young - still lead the group through its biggest hits on stage, and you may hear some new songs from their underrated 2017 album of new material, "The Mission." Styx returns to Tahoe for a show at 7:30 p.m. in the South Shore Room, Harrah's Lake Tahoe, 15 Highway 50, Stateline.

Agent Orange, UK Subs and Guttermouth

This will be a wild one featuring longtimer punks from different eras. The UK Subs led in the second big wave of English punk post-Pistols, while Agent Orange was a leading light of the '80s Southern Cali skate/surf scene. Guttermouth has been a popular fave with modern Cali punk fans for their often funny, often breakneck tunes. The trio plays at 8:30 p.m. at Jub Jub's Thirst Parlor, 71 S. Wells Ave.

Eric Burdon and the Animals

It may a newer set of Animals, but this rock band is still led by growling, blues-influenced belter Eric Burdon, who powered the band with a grittier style during the much poppier British Invasion of the '60s. Their biggest hits included "We Gotta Get Outta This Place," "It's My Life" and "House of the Rising Sun." Burdon and The Animals play at 7:30 p.m. at the South Shore Room, Harrah's Lake Tahoe, 15 Highway 50, Stateline.

98 Degrees

Dirtwire

With some fare a bit different than the dance/electronic fare usually at The BlueBird - although you can absolutely dance like crazy to Dirtwire if you so desire - this show is headlined by this Bay area trio that plays a mix of blues, rock and psychedelia that also brings in musical influences from Africa, Asia and South America. They play at 9 p.m at The BlueBird, 555 E. Fourth St.

Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers

Just a glance at early summer's offerings helps you sense a pattern: package tours with big names are back. Steely Dan is on tour for the first time after founding member Walter Becker died and are still being led by singer/pianist Donald Fagan. Their hits include "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "Reelin' in the Years." The Doobies - who these days feature original vocalists Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons - are best known for hits like "China Grove" and "Black Water." Both bands play at 8 p.m. at the Grand Theatre, Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, 2500 E. 2nd St.

Lake Street Dive

Wax Idols

Cheney Gang Block Party

Pato Banton

Shoreline Mafia

From underground fame in their native Los Angeles to above-ground success this winter with their major-label debut, this hip-hop group is now on tour and will play at 8 p.m. at Jub Jub's Thirst Parlor, 71 S. Wells Ave.

Big Business

This show was just announced late last week, but it's a don't-miss for fans of this dynamic duo from Los Angeles. Big Business write and play big-sounding tunes on the metal/punk side of things that feature distorted bass guitar, intricate drumming and drop-dead stunning vocal parts that are a welcome surprise. It's also a benefit for homeless veteran groups and features locals Elephant Rifle as the openers. The show is at The Saint, 761 S. Virginia St.

Swigs and Pink Awful

The locals' concert series at The Brew Brothers sponsored by radio station NV89-FM continues with two of the more popular alt-rock/indie bands around town right now. Swigs have a quirked-out but tuneful style that will remind fans of the best Olympia/Seattle DIY bands in the mid '90s, while Pink Awful bring huge guitars to the fore for their exuberant and wild tunes. They play at 9 p.m. at The Brew Brothers inside the Eldorado Hotel Casino, 345 N. Virginia St.

Grandma Lee

Imparables

The Monkees Present: the Micky and Michael Show

Boy, is June 9 a busy one for Reno-Tahoe. There are a ton of big acts in the casino world as well as some big ones in the clubs. This one is for the fans of '60s pop and rock, as two Monkees members tour together to play the hits. As one of its primary lead singers, Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz powered the group through hits like "I'm a Believer" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday." Dolenz is joined by guitarist Michael Nesmith, who wrote several of the band's hits and later became a country-rock pioneer. They play at 7:30 p.m. at the South Shore Room, Harrah's Lake Tahoe, 15 Highway 50, Stateline.

Slightly Stoopid and Pepper

It's outdoor concert season at Harveys, with lots of big names on the horizon. This hip-hop group had individual members play a lot in the Reno-Tahoe area in recent years, but this is a more rare show of the four Bone bandmates together onstage, playing hits such as "Look Into My Eyes" and "Tha Crossroads." Kansas

Bringing pop-worthy melodies to progressive rock, this band is still carrying on despite losing huge chunks of their bandmates during their '70s and '80s peaks. Their biggest hits include "Dust in the Wind, "Play the Game Tonight" and "Carry on Wayward Son." Kansas plays at 7:30 p.m. at the Outdoor Plaza, Harrah's Reno, 219 N. Center St.

Too Short

Dead Country Gentlemen and Sit Kitty Sit

We have several duos on the list this round, and there are two duos - both from the Bay area - that are playing together for this show. Both have been to the area before. Dead Country Gentlemen play bluesy-but-loud indie rock, while Sit Kitty Sit are a piano-powered rock band with plenty of fun twists and turns. The show is at Pignic Pub and Patio, 235 Flint St.

Average White Band

Known for their funky and danceable hits of the '70s like "Cut the Cake" and "Pick Up The Pieces," this English band still features its two original guitarist/vocalists, Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre. They play two shows - 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. at Boomtown Casino Hotel, 2100 Garson Road, Verdi.

Howlin' Rain
